Americo and Kathy Saavedra
Americo and Kathy Saavedra serve with Reach Beyond (formerly HCJB Global) to provide pastoral leadership training in various countries in Latin America. They live in Quito, Ecuador and do pastoral training in partnership with Development Associates International (DAI), which is located in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Saavedras are also involved in providing training for churches in and around Quito.
Americo was born in Orellana, Peru, located on the Ucayali River and grew up in an evangelical Christian home in Puerto Callao, Peru. He helped his father with the family bakery and delivered bread to the Wycliffe Bible Translators Center in Yarinachocha. As a teenager, he worked at the Center in various positions, one of which was as Tower Operator, tracking JAARS flights and communicating with translators in remote jungle areas. Kathy was raised in a Christian family in Palos Heights, Illinois, graduated from Wheaton College, and then went to Yarinacocha, Peru, as a teacher for Wycliffe and other missions’ children.
Americo and Kathy met at Americo’s church and were involved in youth and evangelistic ministries together. After dating for three years, they were married in 1970, just before Americo began studies at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. In 1975, they returned to Latin America to be missionaries with HCJB Global in Quito, Ecuador. Throughout the years in Ecuador, Americo worked in the Evangelism, Education and Discipleship Departments, and Kathy in International Broadcasting, Music, and Hospital Patient Care.
The Saavedras were blessed with three children, Steve, David, and Carla, all who are now grown and married. Steve (Compassion International Asia Director) lives in Chiang Mai, Thailand with his wife Jenny and three children - Analise, David and Josie. David and his wife Beth are missionaries with Reach Beyond and also live in Quito, Ecuador. They have four children - Levi, Luke, Aaron, and Evangeline. Carla and her husband Troy live in Palm Coast, Florida and have seven children - Madison, Julia, Danielle, Calvin, Jonathan, Sophia, and Isaac.
In 1992, HCJB Global and Leadership Resources teamed up to form "Apoyo" (which means “support” or “helps” in Spanish) to come alongside the growing churches of Latin America with biblical training and encouragement. Apoyo trains national pastors and church leaders so that they, in turn, can teach other pastoral leaders.
Leadership Learning Workshops are a means to help Christians grow and mature in the likeness of Christ. Areas of focus include the development of Biblical knowledge, character, skills, relationships, and servant leadership. Other workshops and seminars focus on family, counseling, mission, Christian education, and adult education. The goal is to maximize leadership potential for Kingdom-building purposes.
Thank the Lord with Americo and Kathy for the privilege of encouraging and preparing Christian leaders throughout Latin America for God's purposes and glory. Pray for wisdom, grace, and stamina for the Saavedras and for the necessary funds to continue this strategic ministry.
