Sagrada Scholarship Bible Camp (SSBC)
Sagrada is the area name where the Sagrada Scholarship Bible Camp is located; east of Lincoln, Missouri on approximately one hundred acres of wilderness, with the Osage River and Big Buffalo Cove as two of its boundaries.
Scholarship means the camp is free to Angel Tree children and other “at risk” children who would not have the opportunity to go to camp. Angel Tree is a program of Prison Fellowship which reaches out to the children of prisoners and their families. The campers range in age from eight to seventeen years old. The camp is supported with prayer, volunteers, and financially by many different churches, denominations, organizations and individuals.
Bible means SSBC is a non-denominational camp, and they focus on making disciples of the campers. In the USA, one in twenty-eight children have at least one parent incarcerated, and of those, seventy percent may follow the same path as their parents, ending up in prison, unless something is done to change their path. SSBC provides the “change” agent, Jesus, as they share the Good News with the children, and help prepare them to return home as disciples of Jesus. Each child is given a Bible, and during the week, the children are taught how to study it on their own.
Camp means camping. The camp was established in 1997 by Cliff and Susie Johnson. It began with eight boys and two teepees, but today has grown to seven covered wagons, one teepee, and two trapper cabins. In 2015 there were 226 campers who attended SSBC and heard the Good News of Jesus. Since many of the campers came from difficult situations, this was the first time they had heard the Gospel.
Sagrada Scholarship Bible Camp has been a partner with Scenic Park Bible Church since 2000. The camp's founders, Cliff and Susie Johnson, and their six children lived in Eagle River, Alaska before moving to Missouri. Cliff and Susie founded and ran Sagrada Scholarship Bible Camp until Cliff passed away on April 7, 2013.
Following Cliff’s passing, Abraham Godfrey assumed the position of Director in the spring of 2014. But he passed away October 4, 2014. Richie Robbins acted as the interim Director until the fall of 2015. The current director, Tracy Guppy, came November 16, 2015, with his wife, Lucinda. He was formerly a mission/senior adult pastor in southwest Missouri and just prior to that, the Guppys were missionaries for seven years in South Asia.
Please pray for SSBC as it continues to grow and adjusts with the recent changes. The camp continues to have the same purpose: to provide children with an opportunity to attend a free camp and to share the Gospel with them as the camp staff reach out to the children and their families.
Also pray for the 2016 camping season, that God would provide the children who are to attend, and that they would respond to His Good News. Please pray for enough volunteers to work the camp and for God's financial provision for the needs of the camp.
