Peggy Dancy is a member of Wycliffe Bible Translators/SIL and lives in Nampula, Mozambique. She joined Wycliffe in June of 1992 after teaching school in Alaska for twenty-five years.
Peggy taught three years in Anchorage at Williwaw Elementary School, eight years in the village of Tyonek, and fourteen years in Kasilof at Tustumena Elementary School. She was an exchange teacher in Australia in 1985. After first arriving in Anchorage in 1967, she lived in what was then called the Arctic Mission house (now InterAct Mission) with Char (Nordquist) Chuckwuk, who was a member of Scenic Park Bible Church and introduced Peggy to everyone. Peggy attended SPBC three years while in Anchorage and visited occasionally from Tyonek and Kasilof.
Missions has always been a high priority for Peggy, and when in high school she decided to attend Bible school to prepare herself for the mission field. The Lord had other ideas, and after she completed three years at Baptist Bible College in Springfield, MO, He led her to get a teaching degree at Bob Jones University. From there she came directly to Alaska. During a visit to Dave and Jan King in the Philippines she met Joanne Shetler, a linguist with WBT. Through that encounter Peggy began receiving Wycliffe's monthly newsletter and learned that teachers were needed on the mission field. She decided then that she would like to teach overseas when she retired from the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District in 1992. By November of that year she was in Lisbon, Portugal studying Portuguese before heading for Mozambique in December 1993. She was an itinerant teacher for many families in the north of Mozambique for ten years before Morningstar Academy opened its doors in October of 2003 in Nampula. She has taught in this little mission school ever since.
Items for prayer:
1. Wisdom in teaching the precious kids.
2. Health and protection (Peggy is in her sixties, and is set on teaching until she’s seventy, the Lord willing).
3. Direction for the school as Wycliffe kids are growing up and leaving for junior high and high schools elsewhere. New Tribes Mission is increasing their presence in Mozambique and has united with Wycliffe to continue the school. Peggy will continue teaching under NTM when their administrator takes over. Pray for an administrator that will be culturally sensitive and adept at leading the school through this transition period.
